Thinking of coffee?

Many people can’t manage without their hit of caffeine in the morning.  A coffee is part of their daily ritual, wethere it be a quick instant coffee or a nice brew from their favourite cafe.  The active ingredient in coffee that gives it the stimulating effect is caffeine, a central nervous system stimulant.  Another effect of caffiene is a diuretic effect, which means your body excretes more water.

Coffee is the worlds most consumed psychoactive and legal drug, which makes it a good business.  Coffee shop franchising is popular as people are looking for a business that is fairly recession proof.  It’s one of the few luxuries, and sometimes a necassaity that people aren’t willing to give up.

Mixed results on the Microfinance front

Contrary to the attention grabbing headline, the Jury is still out on microfinance. Here is at least some evidence that it does not do all that we hope. That said, the conclusion is definitely more controversial.

The verdict is in on microfinance - PSD Blog - The World Bank Group:

“The results from the first large-scale randomized trial of access to microfinance indicate that it comes up short in many areas of human development. 52 of 104 slums in Hyderabad were randomly selected to receive new branches of a microfinance outfit called Spandana. Abhijit Banerjee and the other randomistas from the Poverty Action Lab describe the results in The Miracle of Microfinance? Evidence from a Randomized Evaluation:

…microcredit does have important effects on business outcomes and the composition of household expenditure. Moreover, these effects differ for different households, in a way consistent with the fact that a household wishing to start a new business must pay a fixed cost to do so. Existing business owners appear to use microcredit to expand their businesses….

[BUT] … it appears to have no discernible effect on education, health, or womens’ empowerment. Of course, after a longer time, when the investment impacts (may) have translated into higher total expenditure for more households, it is possible that impacts on education, health, or womens’ empowerment would emerge. However, at least in the short-term (within 15-18 months), microcredit does not appear to be a recipe for changing education, health, or womens’ decision-making.:”

The headline aside, the authors correctly point out that 15-18 months is a short a time period to measure dramatic changes. That the loans help the business (which in the longer term would be predicted to positively impact education, wealth, health, and MAYBE women’s equality issues), is enough for me to remain skeptical of any article saying the verdict is in.

BTW I included this for completeness and to overcome any bias I have in its favor ;) In my limited personal experience, microloans have worked VERY well. True my experience is limited (I won’t count Kiva even thouh that has been positive too!), but locally the loans served their purpose (the borrowers had no access to credit) and the borrowers have made every payment to date.

So, I guess more research is needed to determine what about microfinance works (or under what conditions), and when it does not.

Regardless of the money you have to invest, the time your willing to spend, or the experience you may have, you can find a home business that suits your needs.

Its worth mentioning, there are “scams” out there. I’ve learned that most of the home business opportunity scams involve a solicitation. I get weird emails from time to time about some lost uncle from Uruguay or a rich cousin in south Africa who just learned of an inherited diamond mine but needs money to start operation, those are scams, not the best home based business to start unless your a complete criminal…Use your judgement when it comes to evaluating business opportunities. If your being asked to or thinking about spending money, ask yourself, ” What am I buying”.

Making money online selling information was and still is very popular. Here is the deal. Much of the information you can purchase online, can be found for free, but that takes time. So its more of a decision on time than money. Another thing I’ve learned is that most quality information product you can sell or buy online have a review or probably several, spend some time reading what others have to say about the business information.

Many people online share their money making methods for free, they have been a valuable resource for me and others that I know. Spend some time reading about making money online and profitable business opportunities. Blogs are cool because you can often times go back months or years and actually watch an entrepreneur progress as they document there experience.

I learn to trust my gut in most areas of my life and figuring out the best business to start is no different. Here are a few more tips to help you find the right business opportunity:

You’ve seen the ads and probably evaluated a business opportunity or two. What makes a home business opportunity a profitable business to start? First glance might prompt you to say, “that’s a dumb question man”, but give it a minute and think about what really makes a profitable business venture. It takes more than “making money” to answer the question correctly, I’ll explain.

There are a million ways to make money, and there are millions of ways to make money online too. Not all the ways of earning money are high profit. Lets look at profit. I like to think of profit as “whats left”. Whats left after you’ve paid the bills, and spent the time.

We have limited resources and how we use those resources pretty much defines our quality of life. Where we vacation, what we eat for dinner, who we eat dinner with, where our kids go to college… You get the picture. So when your thinking of a high profit business opportunity, keep your resources in mind. I focus on time and money. Sure there are thousands of other resources, but time and money can acquire most of those.

When I make decisions such as what business ideas I want to invest time in I look at time first, you can’t buy that, and you can’t get it back once its lost. If you trade time for money, its tough to have both, ever! So those home business ideas that require me to spend a lion share of my time in a day are automatically out. I also like top earning businesses that have a passive element or better yet, multiple streams of passive income.

Profitable online business opportunities really turn my head, there is so much passivity to online business ideas. Some of the popular online business opportunities are blogging, selling your own products, selling someone Else’s‘ products, selling ad space to someone who is or maybe a membership site. I don’t own a membership website right now, but that is a major goal of mine this year. I have a great idea for a membership site and am in planning stages. Membership websites are great for the recurring monthly membership fees you collect.

As with any high profit home business opportunity its about adding value. A couple tips worth mentioning:

  • Own your own marketing system.
  • Understand Internet marketing Before you spend money.
  • Start a blog.
  • Learn from others who have results.
  • Have a healthy scepticism but don’t be cynical.
  • Know what your trying to accomplish.
  • Don’t quit until your done.

It really makes no difference what business opportunity you choose, you have to add value and you have to persist. You will have obstacles, challenges, or difficulties, what ever you chose to call them, get over it and enjoy the journey. Help others along the way. These are a few of the top tips I can give to a person who wants to start a home business or online business.

Another thing I’ve heard a lot of is “there is so much crap on the Internet”, I don’t agree. If all you find is crap on the Internet, try looking in a different place. I’ve found dozens of successful people who are very transparent and willing to share the things that have worked for them, I think its great. You can buy information online that will save you time or you can spend time and get it all for free. Its up to you, I’ve done both, they both work.

The highest earning online business is going to be the business that you persist in. Look at your life and see the things in your past that you have persisted with. It a safe bet that you stick with the things that you were genuinely interested in, so find a business idea that really captivates your interest. Every business will have tough spots here and there, a genuine interest in the products you sell or the service you provide will help in those tough times.

There are thousands of good small business ideas, choosing the right one for you requires a little self reflection, don’t cut corners, really get into you and what you want to create, you’ll thank me later.

Starting the best business opportunity is about having a good idea of the results you want to create. Trying to figure out the best business opportunities for 2009 can be a bit tricky. With a more unstable economy, picking the best business to start is crucial. Not to over simplify, but starting a business that requires little to no start up capital might be a good idea in today’s economy, and here is why:

If the business opportunity does not pan out, your not out much. Many people opt for business opportunities that are simple and fast. Online businesses, for example can many times be started for free or with very little start up costs. Many people will actually start a group of web sites and in couple months time, have them narrowed down to ones that will be profitable. Selling ads space can be a great business model.

I use this business idea on several of my own sites and it seems productive. Regardless of the business opportunity to start, you’ll be adding value. Its important to know what that value is and to whom its being added. For example if your building traffic to sell ad space then the value is for the advertiser. I was introduced to the Internet via a turnkey business opportunity in the personal development field. I liked personal development and was looking for a good way to earn money online. The business I found seemed a good fit so I choose to get started.

I think that is the key. Choose a business opportunity that is a good fit for you and what your looking to accomplish. Online business opportunities and work at home businesses are profitable business models because of low fixed expenses, and the low start up capital requirements. Starting a business online is a great opportunity for a person who does not want to dump 250 thousand dollars in a business they’re not sure they want to start in the first place.

There are many free website platforms to start an online business with a website. I think starting a website or blog is one of the best businesses to start. Young people like college students or people who have full time jobs can start a web business and earn extra money. I’ve found persistence really pays online. Most people start and then give up on their business idea before they really earn any money. Just keep at it.

The cool thing about many online entrepreneurs who make money is they are more than willing to share how they have done it. Spend some time researching different money making strategies online. Real Quick… This won’t be me telling you how to plan your business. The technical aspect of business planning is well covered and If your the technical type and find value in technical business planning information, you’ll have to take your search elsewhere.

Business Planning Where to Start.

Planning that starts from an integral source is an intelligent planning. Breaking up a business plan from a life plan or family plan is futile… It doesn’t work. Compartmentalizing planning, engineering your life by “Business Planning” and such is a foundation less pursuit in my experience. The integral source by the way could be you, your dream in life?

When planning a business you must define success. A business plan that defines success as market share, position in market niche, or % of yearly or quarterly growth, is silly and creates maniacal people. I come from the small business perspective more specifically the entrepreneurial perspective.

How to Create a Strong Business Plan.

A strong business plan starts with you the entrepreneur. What effect does the business going here or there have on you, your dreams, aspirations, and objectives in life? Creating an academic, manipulative, document of architecture that describes the intended path of a business is silly. Business doesn’t work that way.

Business planning that is approached from a perspective of need is silly. Creating a Business plan so a bank will give you money? Its like intelligent begging. What about a business plan that doesn’t need the banks money? Could a great business plan be contingent on an idea that seeds itself? Could the core business philosophy create movement in the business. A business that is underway produces data, observables, trends, right?

Alternative Business Plan.

Maybe when a person starts with the end in mind, their end result. The result they want. Maybe from this perspective the business doesn’t need a “plan” but effort. Another or maybe alternative way to approach a business plan is to create momentum. If the need arises for you to have a “proper business Plan“, you might find it much easier to create with some results to reflect on, expand on, and steer into the future?
