You wouldn't believe the deals you can get on cars at the automobile auctions!  My friend manages a used car lot, and I went along with him the last time he went to the local automobile auction.

Here's how he does it; he takes his top mechanic and goes before the auction starts.  He goes through the cars that he may be interested in & checks them out with the mechanic.  They know what they're able to sale any given model/make for, so they write down the maximum amount they are willing to bid on each car.  Then when it comes time to bid they just up the ante over and over again each time they get outbid until they reach their maximum.  Some auctions they end up with now cars, and some options they end up with multiple cars.

So how does this help the average Joe?

It actually does.  The only difference is that you don't have a mechanic that works for you and you don't know what people are willing to pay for any given car.  Here's my solution for you; take someone with you that does.  If you think real hard I guarantee you that you know a mechanic or someone that knows a fair amount about mechanics.  I can think of about 10 off the top of my head.  Offer to buy them lunch or offer them a trade of some kind.

The only other unresolved issue for you at this point is knowing the value.  This is quite simple issue for you to solve.  The best thing to do would be to take along something with internet access.  That way you can look up NADA and Kelley Blue Book values on the fly.  You shouldn't have to pay anything above low book on a car at an auction, even if it's in perfect condition.

So how do I get into a car auction?

Most communities have open auctions weekly, or at the least monthly.  Typically the general public is welcome to come & even bid.  Check your local newspaper, and I'll bet you can find one soon!
